Investment Strategies

At Matco, we offer a range of portfolio models to best serve our clients' needs. Our models offer clients well-diversified investment solutions that are designed to protect capital and achieve long-term growth, without taking on unnecessary risk.

Income Portfolios

Matco Bond Portfolio provides safety of capital and a regular cash flow consisting of interest income, as well as the opportunity for some growth. The portfolio is well diversified across issuers and maturities to take advantage of different times in the market cycle, and primarily consists of A- (or better) rated securities (with limited exposure to BBB-rated securities).

Matco Preferred Share Portfolio seeks to maximize after-tax income while providing preservation of capital by investing in high-quality preferred shares that pay regular dividend income. The Portfolio is actively managed and adjusted for sector exposure and dividend features to take advantage of the different stages within a market cycle.

Blended Portfolio

Matco Balanced Portfolio provides a high income yield and growth, but with low volatility. The portfolio employs Matco's core Canadian Equity and Bond Portfolios, and is well-diversified across market capitalizations, geographic regions, asset classes, and sectors.

Equity Portfolio

Matco Canadian Equity Portfolio seeks to provide income and long-term capital appreciation, with downside protection that comes from investing primarily in mid-to-large cap Canadian companies that have strong financial statements, reasonable multiples, and are predictable and defensive in nature. The companies held in this portfolio should be profitable and have a strong propensity to distribute earnings in the form of dividends, while also reinvesting excess earnings back into the company to achieve additional growth.

Specialty Portfolios

Matco Canadian Small Cap Portfolio seeks to provide long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in small-to-mid cap Canadian companies that exemplify strong growth attributes. Companies are expected to be profitable and have a propensity to reinvest excess earnings. Other characteristics include strong financial statements, reasonable multiples, predictability, analyst recognition, and market participation.

Matco Energy Portfolio is a pure oil and gas fund with a bias toward small-to-mid cap companies that are low-cost producers and offer better relative value than their larger counterparts. The portfolio employs fundamental analysis and its portfolio managers' industry experience to identify superior investment opportunities. This is accomplished by seeking out companies with strong management teams and business models, as well as proven assets that should benefit from favourable industry and macroeconomic trends.
